The following are some of the most common medications prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction:
- Viagra - A popular medication that can help increase sexual desire. (See “How to get ED medication”)
- Cialis - This is a prescription medication that can help men with erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is the same ingredient found in Cialis. Tadalafil works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow. This increased blood flow helps men with erectile dysfunction achieve and maintain an erection.
- Levitra - A drug that helps men with erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient vardenafil, which is similar to Viagra but works by increasing blood flow to the penis. Levitra works by relaxing the muscles in the penis, allowing for a stronger and longer-lasting erection.
- Stendra - This drug is used to treat men who have not responded to nitrates (medications used to treat chest pain).
- Staxyn - This drug is used to treat men who have erectile dysfunction. It contains the active ingredient nifedipine, which belongs to a class of medications called nitrates.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration today approving a generic version of Viagra, which will retail for $1 per pill. The drugmaker also approved a new, brand-name version of the impotence drug Cialis.
According to the FDA, Viagra, Cialis, and similar drugs contain the same active ingredients as the original prescription drugs.
The generic version of Viagra, the “little blue pill,” is sold under the brand name Cialis. The brand name version of the drug is also sold under the name of its maker, Eli Lilly and Company, which also makes Cialis.
Under the new, generic drug approval, the price of the brand-name drug will be higher than the generic version. Under the brand-name drug, Viagra and Cialis are both sold under the brand name Levitra.
The FDA said the generic version is “worth the price difference” and approved the new, brand-name drug for sale. It’s likely that the price difference will be significant for Cialis customers who are looking to buy the original drug.
“This is the largest price-contingent FDA approval for a medication approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration to treat erectile dysfunction,” said Janet Woodcock, the chief of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a statement. “We’re pleased that Eli Lilly and Company is able to bring this very affordable drug to market.”
Cialis is a brand-name drug that’s available as a generic. The generic drugmaker says it’s the first generic that’s been approved by the FDA for treating the same condition as the brand-name drug.
“While the generic is a great advance for Cialis because it’s generic and is FDA-approved for most uses, we’re disappointed by the price differential,” said Michael Leicularly, CVS’s chief executive.
Cialis and Levitra both contain the same active ingredient, tadalafil, which is found in Cialis and Levitra. Cialis and Levitra are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA says it’s the most similar drug to the brand-name drug, and it’s also the first one to be approved for treating the same condition as the brand-name drug.
Cialis and Levitra both are sold in the U. as “generic” drugs and are not regulated by the FDA. Cialis was the first drug to be approved for use in the U. S., and it’s currently the only generic to have U. approval.
Viagra, Levitra, and similar drugs have been available in the U. since at least the late 1990s. In the late 1990s, a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction was approved, but the Food and Drug Administration hasn’t approved it.
A similar drug was approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in 1998. The original drug was sold under the brand name Stendra. Stendra was also approved for pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2003 and has since been approved for other uses.
The generic drugmaker said it’s “continued to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the new drug and will update the product information as needed.
Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
